Yep, I've never heard a good reason why I should want to use a patch that I will need to replace once I get home, if it even gets me there.

As far as the tube of glue carried on the bike, I only crack it open in case of emergencies. The best approach is to save up a bunch of punctured tubes and patch them all in one batch at home, with the same tube of glue. That way, you'll have plenty of spare tubes to draw from until the next round.
