People love to gripe about Garmin because they release great hardware, saddled by mediocre half-finished software...and you end up lucky if they do anything about it.
Problems with Bluetooth pairing are not unique to Garmin. Not a big concern for me as I don't particularly care. I have seen riders who regularly use the live track feature which I presume requires the 510 to pair with a cellphone and it appears to work reliably. Not sure what the issue is with the 1000 but I assume they'll get it sorted.
I don't have any complaints with the operation of my 500 and 800 and they seem to do what they're supposed to day in and day out.
If you don't like Garmin you could try similar products from Polar but I'm not sure you'll be any happier as their software is also not perfect.
