I have another option,, stay with 6speed.. same wheels.. change derailleur from XT to ultegra600 and put on road bars and use an original set of the first grip shifters... I think I have them up in attic in a box.. they go on bar ends.. big barrel things.. for 6 speed double.. will probably be nice for winter with big gloves on too.. I still have plenty of tight spaced 6spd road freewheels around...(not sure how the old 6spd XT derailleur would work with these old grip shifters but I know the 600 and road freewheels worked fine with it..
