Somewhere here on bikeforums, a guy in Australia with a Vietnamese name posted some fantastic instructions on how to service these.
In my case, I squirted in WD40 and ATF alternately over the course of a few weeks. Eventually, the shifters came back to life. That was four or so years ago, and I use the bike frequently now.
