Have you considered the HubBub? It makes a upright bar gripshift into a barend shifter kinda. I've used them and they work ok, might get you on the road on budget until you can find some Versas.
Very cool, thanks, did not know about these. In particular, these opens up the possibility of using the Shimano Nexus grip shifter, which I was surprised to like a lot on the Breezer Uptown, a lot more than the Alfine trigger shifter I tried on another bike, which I had assumed would be the best for me.
