Actually, Shimano sells x2 and x3 front derailleurs, as well as x2 and x3 front brifters. If you use index shifting, it matters. If you use friction shifting on the front, they'll probably all work with a triple.
Apologies, let me rephrase. I've never seen a front derailleur advertised with the number of REAR cogs.
I could definitely see them advertising x2 and x3, even though it's likely that either of those will work for both doubles and triples. (Not the brifters, I'm talking about the derailleur.)
