Training and sport/recreational rides - Morning? Mid-day? Evening? Any time?

So, this evening, since it is so nice out, someone suggested I take advantage and go for a nice ride.
But it's EVENING! I've NEVER gone riding so late. Which gets me to something I've been wondering. Do most people do their training or sporty group rides in the mornings, evenings, or do many people go on such rides at ANY time of day? Presumably, people who ride as a matter of convenience would ride at any time of day, and those who commute by cycling might make a longer ride of the ride to work or home depending on the season, so...
For training and other sport/recreational rides on your road bike, i.e., NOT commuting or convenience rides such as for errands, social calls, etc. - do you have a preference or habit regarding time of day?
And if your rides are typically quite long, consider what time you like it to be at the mid-point of your ride - before, after, or sometime around noon?
