Bikes: 2013 Surly Disc Trucker, 2004 Novara Randonee , old fixie , etc

When buying the Disc Trucker I read about rack/disc problems so I bought a Topeak Explorer Disc rear rack. Explorer is tubular alu alloy, nice combo of moderate strength/lightness. But Surly DT rear brakes are mounted in rear triangle so it seems that a disc-special rear rack is perhaps not actually required. OTOH the front disc brake does get in the way, seems that one would need about 3 cm of extra clearance off each mount.
