Ask for a car instead! Then a bicycle won't look so bad.
My three kids all had road bikes and were doing things like cross state rides and racing by your age. However I was with them a lot of the time and where we live is mostly OK. On the other hand, we didn't let our kids watch R-rated movies until they were 16 YO. Different parents have different standards.
