I wouldn't risk damaging an expensive manual by taking it into the shop while I'm working on bike. It makes more sense to me to print out whatever I might need for reference and toss the greasy pages when I'm done.
I guess I work cleaner than you, and maybe you missed the part about each page in a plastic protector.
