The technology is already in the cars that are on the road now, its just a matter of getting the public to like the new tech. People can understand an accidental death in a freak accident, life happens. People can't take technology failing leading to an accidental death, even though it could/will be 1000x safer then human interactions.
I question how safe it will be for cyclists. My wife has an MDX that beeps every time you stray out of the lane, including to give a cyclist 3 feet. I see lots of MDX's on the road, very close up.
