I thought I was pretty clear. My road bike is set up with gearing suitable for the areas I ride in most of the time, namely southern NYS, NJ and CT. That is I use a double crankset with a 39t inner, and a 13-26 cassette. There are a few hills that it may be inadequate for, but they're manageable, since hills here are either steep and short, or graded and long.

However, touring takes me to mountainous areas, so I use similar gearing, but use a triple crankset with a 26t granny. I only use it for those climbs that are beyond what I'm generally used to. That arrangement let's my touring bike ride like my road bike (same bike) but keeps me out of trouble.
