Bike touring from Winnipeg to Minnesota/Chicago routes & suggestions?

I`m departing tommorow to continue my trek across North America, and I`m heading to Chicago to write a final exam. My tentative plan is to take the #1 to highway 12, follow this to Fort Francis, then South to Duluth, and again South to Minneapolis, where I will take a train into either Milwaukee (and bike along the lakes there - which looks awesome) or Chicago. Unfortunately I am crunched for time as my exam is on August 17th and I want to get to Chicago by the 14th or 15th to have a couple days to prepare, and I won`t be able to ride the entire way. Here are my questions:

Does my route suit bike touring? i.e, does it have frequent towns, decent paved shoulders, campsites, etc?

Is the route along the water from Milwaukee to Chicago a nice ride, and should I take a train earlier in order to bike this route?

I`m leaning on taking a train a bit earlier to get to Milwaukee to bike along the lakes. In Alberta and Northern BC, biking near the lakes gave way to gorgeous views. Any words or advice about this route would be appreciated; I couldn`t find much info online.

This is a photo of my tentative route:
