This is not a surprising cultural difference. Here in California pedestrians have enjoyed an entitlement to a right of way over vehicles in most situations, and bicycles are vehicles. A MUP is a chaotic mix of vehicles and pedestrians, I side with the pedestrians. Of course, times and culture changes. I remember 40 years ago if you stepped of the curb in California cars would stop on both sides of the street. Now, pedestrians are getting hit in crosswalks. Vehicles, including cyclists, feel entitled because they are bigger and faster. Coming back at you, you have a cager mindset, you are to pedestrians what cagers are to cyclists.
