Hi all,

I have a peugeot racer with nice looking vintage chrome wheels . Unfortunately they are a health hazard as the braking is awful when wet . I am on the search for alloy wheels that I could swap them out for .I have been told that alloy wheels are much better for braking in bad conditions .

But I am a bit out of my depth when it comes to wheels . Has anybody some ideas on what exactly I should be searching for on ebay ?

Here's some info ;

Bike is a ten speed , with a 5 speed freewheel .

The tyres say 27 x 1 1/4 on them .

I measured the spacing between the dropouts and came up with 123mm for the back and 95 mm at the front .I could be a little off but it's a french bike and everything else on it seems to be inconveniently sized .Would a 120 fit in there ?

Another idea I have is to find some alloy rims in 27 x 1 1/4 like the ones below and have a wheel builder put them onto my old hubs and spokes. Good idea ?
