Brake component compatibility, 980 canti's and Tektro levers

Built up a Schwinn High Sierra drop bar mtb. The cantis that came on it are 980 Dia-Compe that have the fixed length straddle cable with ends made on. You cannot adjust the straddle length because of the ends being made on. These are a pretty wide profile brakes and it is recommended to run longer straddle cables anyway.

The levers are the Tektro aero levers. These are the model 200 levers. May have mdl wrong, but these are NOT for V brakes. Using lined cables and new Dia-Compe pads. Front brake is OK, bad is lousy. I am just wondering if the levers are just not made to go with this setup. Suggestions / help appreciated.
