...and the rest is history. I can't remember the exact date, but it was a beautiful day in May, 1970, when I borrowed my roomate's Schwinn Varsity to run a few errands here and there within a few mile radius. He just told me I had to pedal while shifting gears.
Well, AA during the 70s was something of a bike nirvana, at least compared to the rest of SE Michigan. Although cycling briefly became very popular even in inner city Detroit (Highland Park, actually), where I was living. I remember discussing the best type of steel for frames with my buddy. then he bought his mom's old VW Beetle and bicycling was a dream of the past.

Sorry to hear though of your crime and health issues.
Thanks. The crime fear is also a dream of the past. I'm now walking intrepidly everywhere in the city. But riding is something I decided to put off until early next year, if all goes to plan. I have to focus on my health right now, and I hope to be starting back to work fairly soon, if they'll have me.
