The Op's issue is not as far fetched as you try to make it sound. There is a substantial difference in the amount of hand force it takes to lock up a rim brake, and a hydraulic disc brake; 5 times as much in fact.

Thus if a rider hits the brakes in a panic in a paceline it definitely has more capability to cause havoc.

So it's not about whether they're a good rider or a bad rider, its about they react differently particularly in the hands of an unskilled rider.



And even amongst skilled riders, several pro's have raised the issue, and argue that if you're going to discs in the peleton, you've got to go all or nothing due to the differences.

I'm willing to bet you some hypersensitive clubs will make a rule about this.

Personally, for the time being, I'm going to give people showing up to group rides with hydraulic discs a wide berth until they demonstrate how they ride.
