Bikes: 1978 Raleigh Competition-1974 Raleigh Folder-1983 Austro Daimler-198? Fuji Monterey-Surly LHT-Surly Karate Monkey-Surly Cross Check

Threads like this are always interesting and fun with all the strong opinions and sparring so I'll chime in. I think that this is one of those choices that comes down to personal preference and tolerance for risk. I recently assembled my dream touring bike and put Shimano 105 3X10 brifters on it. The main reason was just personal preference. Are they a little more risky? I'm sure they are but for me the risk is worth it.

Now, having stated that, most of my touring trips span a few days. I think that if I did more extended touring where I was spending multiple weeks in the saddle, I might choose bar end shifters. I have bikes with both kinds of shifters and they both certainly have their redeeming qualities IMO. I've never had any problems with my brifters but I have seen a few broken ones.
