I was fortunate enough to win a month of coaching at a race last season from a local reputable coach. I used it and learned quite a bit about training and racing. I also learned that a structured coaching plan would not work for me.
I have friends who thrive on structure, having an exact workout and being accountable to a coach. That is not me. I prefer a more laid back approach and I do a lot of group rides which are not always compatible with an interval or Z2 workout.
I've done OK on my own. I do ask questions and pay attention to what successful riders are doing.
No matter if you get a coach or not, keep in mind it's not always the fittest rider, the guy with the highest FTP or the best sprinter that wins the race. Learning how to race well comes from experience in actual races and learning from lots of mistakes! Cheers!
