Any 90's brands you suggest?
Manufacturers had a bit more identity back then; some even made their own frames. But unless you really want a GT Triple Triangle with Groove Tube, Cannondale Killer V, or other specific frame; youre better off looking for frame quality and upgradability.

The main issue is rear spacing. 135mm will make it compatible with modern drivetrains. Steel frames can be spread out but Al should not. Another issue is headtube diameter. A 1 1/8" headset will make finding a modern fork much easier. This is more of an issue if the bike comes with a DOA suspension fork.

1995 seems to be a good year for "modern" vintage MTB bikes - by this point there were few to little 130mm rear ends - even the 7 speeds were 8speed hubs with a spacer, and 1" headsets practically disappeared.
