OK. This advice is why I posted here in C&V. The shifting is smooth through all combinations, and it trims out perfectly, just like I'm used to with friction shifters, and the chain is not anywhere close to dropping. Online tutorials seem pretty insistent that 3 clicks is the goal, but those videos usually are addressing modern gear, not 15 year old parts. Thanks for the reality check!
