So I stock Continental folding Gatorskins tires for local resale with my charity benefit gig. Not a big mover--to date I have sold 9 with no customer complaints.
However, I sold 2 more a couple of days ago with new tubes and a new Shimano RS81-C35 wheelset.
Customer reports one blew out after 50 yards of travel; and the other after about 5 miles. Says they were installed without tools. Guy weighs 200 and they were inflated to 110psi. Guy is credible--I'm sure he installed them correctly.
Upon researching, I find that this is not the first time this has happened.
Conti Gatorskin Blow Out Zero Miles
Judging from the customer reviews on Amazon, I guesstimate maybe 8% of Gator tires have this defect.
I gave him two replacement tires; but I'm wondering how safe they will be to ride?
Do these defects come in "batches" of tires; or are they completely random?
To further complicate matters, I am sitting on approximately $800 worth (my cost) of Gator tires that were purchased from the same source at the same time (hence same "batch").
How safe/unsafe are they? Would you continue to sell them?
They are past the European vendor's warranty period so I can't return the unused ones. Presumably I could be reimbursed for failed ones; however there is no way to determine whether or not they will fail without putting customers at risk.
So I don't know what to do. Please advise. Thank you.
