Since I have no shame, I'll give an update. I tried the nair thing over the weekend. Went from full Chewbacca as I've been to busy to worry about leg hair. It worked pretty well, but a couple of small patches didn't come off all the way. I decided to give it a couple of nights and do it again, as they recommend a 72 hour window between uses. In between, I got prickly almost as fast as I would have with shaving, and the second round of nair did next to nothing for the short hairs. Not sure why. I left it on for a good 5+ minutes (they say not to go over 10). Don't think I'll use it again.

I think I'm gonna get that 30 dollar epilator...
