Sounds like a good plan! The one thing to watch out for, especially if you're buying used, is fit. We have a bunch of step-through bikes at the company where I work and they seem to range is size from tiny all the way up to small. They're a hoot to ride around campus, but the fit isn't good enough to do much more than that.
I'd also suggest looking for a bike with more than one gear. Our bikes are 3-speeds and I was surprised at how useful having at least a couple of different gears is.

I am pretty short so small is OK for me.
I have seen a few of the standard Schwinn vintage bikes that everyone writes about, and only a couple of others outside of that.
The Schwinns look to be "10 speed" but I am not very well versed in vintage so I am not quite sure. I worry that those wouldn't hold up an Athena but there seems to be tons of them out there.
