It makes sense, but the approach encompassed more priorities than 1-2-shift.
Mirrored shifters = cheaper parts manufacturing in the long run, and some interchangeable parts.

Properly adjusted and lubed, few FD's are as smooth as Campy's 10-sp.
I'd clean them, lube all the pivots with Slick 50, try to lube the cable inside the housing, as well.
Then, adjust by trial and error, riding in between adjustments. I'd also get some grease inside that L shifter.
Practice so you can "grab enough" lever for the small-to-big, and a solid button push drops chain the opposite way, as well.

Sorry I can't change the product, but the next best thing is to get the product doing what it does as well as it possibly can.
