Steve Hogg noted, when questioning the current orthodoxy, that no one is advocating a position that is more "in front of the pedal axle." I would like to try a more rearward pedal axle position than current cleat options allow --e.g., more than 11mm but not so much as to run into any toe overlap problems. The place where a fluid stroke can be maintained while spreading the load may be better --i.e., a position that may not necessarily be directly under the ball of the foot.
This idea has been on the fringes for at least a decade, and it still isn't catching on.
