In the bicycle trade, it's shorthand for "light alloy" meaning aluminum, or more specifically an aluminum alloy of some kind (there are many aluminum alloys).
I knew I could count on one of my NY folks to help me get it straight ('m a born and raised New Yorker), thanks.

The Rivendell site has one set in CroMo for $68.00, and another set in Aluminum they're selling for $90.00, but the set on Amazon is only $60.00 so I wanted to make sure they were not steel (or CroMo).
