Yes, of course the bottom bracket will have to be replaced if it isn't the proper length. But we know nothing about the crank Scooty Puff wants to use nor anything about how long the current spindle is. I suggest he try using the one he currently has that is working properly and cross the bridge of a new spindle if he comes to it.
That would be the analog solution. OR he could measure the one that he has and research his new crankset to find what spindle length is recommended. That would be the more digital answer.
