The thing about a conversion, if you do the work yourself, all the parts are transferrable to your next project. And you already have the parts, so no cost there. You are really just talking some cables, housings, and bar tape.
If/when something better comes along, you can just swap all of your stuff. I have done this countless times.
A bigger question is if you just don't like the bike aesthetically. In that case, I would clean it up, sell it and look for something different. I would not spend the money and time painting this bike.
This is pretty much true. But the OP may do a conversion on a bike with a one inch headset and a 68 mm BB and then end up with a bike with a one and 1/8 inch headset and a 73 mm BB. This just happened to me.
The bar, stem, and BB on my 1987 Specialized stumpjumper comp that I did a drop bar conversion on a few years back will not go over to the 1992 Trek 950 I just picked up.
