By the same rationale I should never drive my car to someplace where I'd be leaving it unattended since it might get stolen. And I should never leave my house since someone might break in and steal my things. Sure, following those rules might make me less susceptible to thieves, but it would make both my car and bike pretty worthless for normal transportational needs and it would make me a virtual prisoner in my house. Sorry, but that's far too high a price to pay in exchange for a bit of a reduction in the chance of theft.

I prefer to take moderate precautions commensurate with the perceived theft risk in different settings which still let me use both my car and bike for normal transportation, including to destinations where I'll be out of sight of them. And I'll continue to leave my house without worrying too much about the chance that someone will be breaking in. It's been over 40 years since I last had a bike stolen and during that time I've used my bikes for innumerable daily commutes, shopping trips, and other outings to places where I had to leave the bike unattended. Could my bike be stolen tomorrow? Sure, but the loss would be insignificant compared to what I would have lost over the years by not taking my bike on all those trips.
