My rando rig has a 9 speed crank/chainring, 11 speed FD, and the rest is 10 speed. Works perfectly, never had anything smoother.
I would favor the 9 speed chain to match the rear 9 speed cassette. But a 10 speed chain would certainly work too. It is all about the rear shifter.
