Very interesting. That badge number does indicate a bike built on
Thursday Sept. 16th, 1976. From what I know so far however the "Super-Lite" seat tube decal only came on '77 models and the VGT-Luxe derailleur on '77-'78 models, which if correct may indicate something was changed. Unfortunately I don't have any other late '76 Superior models documented to be sure either way, so it is possible they introduced those changes on or before the day your bike was built.
