Not being able to store white gas shouldn't be too much of an issue, just use it all up or give it away before putting your touring gear in storage.
If you really need a backup, get an alcohol stove. Heet yellow can be purchased just about anywhere.
If the MSR Whisperlight is a dedicated white fuel stove, is there any real issue with the OP extending their options by purchasing a gas canister stove?
I agree with the alcohol stoves being one of the options people should consider but maybe not the best type of spill in a motel room?
I've three different stove types "currently" and see nothing about the OP's choices to suggest they are on a path to destruction.
