The skates issue is a function of two things -- a cleat sticking out (covered or not) and stiffness, not allowing for a regular walking gait. Racing MTBs kill factor 1 but not factor 2.
I also use my shoes to ride. But every so often I do stuff like stop at Starbucks. Interestingly, my Road shoe buds usually ask me to go in, as I'm less likely to wipe out.
Yeah, walking into Starbucks with Kool Kovers on my SPD-SL shoes isn't a problem. I'm guessing your "buds" don't have them.
Whatever works for you is fine. I'm just saying, the argument about walking in shoes is a non issues for me, as the primary purpose of a cycling shoe is to ride in.
