I think the trick to riding in the hoods/drops (or the far bars of my trekking bars, for that matter), is riding with your shoulders rounded forward, so the bumps are absorbed by your shoulder muscles instead of your cervical vertebrae... If your fit is well adjusted, you shouldn't be putting weight on the handlebars, so your shoulder muscles should be loose enough to absorb road-whack from your front wheel.
