Indication of how times have changed - when I was a young cyclist, getting spare ball bearings was easy as could be. Every hardware store carried a variety of sizes and packaging. For some reason, these days they are impossible to find in my neck of the woods - I have to beg, borrow or buy them from the LBS at outrageous prices (not that I am complaining - they've always been easy to deal with). So its a good idea to have spares handy....shows people don't use them as much as in the past!
I've had no issues buying loose bearings at a variety of bike shops here in Toronto. I often re use the old ones if they appear sound and yes, a few seem to always get away...
