As I do way more backpacking I am going to way in from the backpacker's perspective. These days that vast majority of backpackers including AT and PCT thru hikers are using butane based Jetboils, Pocket Rockets, or alcohol stoves. They are way more efficient and light weight. Except for cold weather or Alpine situations, white gas is becoming obsolete. Even at that I have used butane canisters on 25 deg F morning multiple times with work arounds such as keeping the canister at the foot of your sleeping bag overnight. The butane canisters are readily available in National Parks and backpacker stop off points, and also Sportsmarts, Walmart, and Dicks. I just did a PCT trip where a 4 oz butane gas canister and a Jetfoil lasted most people 8 days. Bike tourers have way more access to civilization than backcountry backpackers and can easily cary more than 4 oz. Except maybe in international situations using kerosine or unleaded gas is way old school and you better like cleaning up soot.
