The regular bikes are alright but I want something a bit faster. And often those come without sturdy racks or racks at all.
In China it is very common to see a passenger sitting on the rear rack and, in fact, many bike have a cushion seat attached to the rack, such as here:

There may be more sturdy solutions there, but I find so much charm in a guy hard pedaling with a girlfriend on such a seat. The first time I went shopping for bike accessories in China I immediately secured such a seat

, but now they are e.g. common on Ebay.
It's not always the guy pedaling.
