So a tidbit of information I have picked up is that SRAM shifters specify that they need a 1.1mm shifter cable. Shimano uses a 1.2mm shifter cable. If you put a 1.2 cable in a SRAM shifter it will be

A: Really hard to get to thread through your shifter.
B: More likely to break because it has excess friction.

Make sure you use the right width cable.
