Hmmmm...... I never had any soot problem. I burn denatured alcohol which I got by the gallon at my local Home Depot. I've yet to use a Trangia, but I have two that are retail, both by Vargo, the Triad and the Decagon. Tell you the truth, I like my DIY stove way better than either one of these. I can put more fuel in mine, it burns hotter, and it's just 1 part. Nothing to lose or break.

The Trangia is used by many campers, so if it is a problem, a solution could be resolved with users.
