This is the relevant bit in regard to crank/BB matching. Pre-CPSC cranks must be mated with Pre-CPSC spindles, and post- to post. All the cranks in this thread should go with post-CPSC spindles. 1978 was the change, though I think there are <8> dated cranks that go both ways. Here's my spindle length cheat sheet:

Italian:
Double -Pre: 113mm. Post: 115.5mm
Triple - Pre: 118. Post: 124


English/French:
Double - Pre: 112. Post: 114.5
Triple - Pre:117. Post: 123
