What I've been doing is going across as soon as the cross street turns red and cars stop, a couple seconds before the oncoming left turn arrow comes on. Works pretty well.
According to fellow local commuters, it is legal in my state (VA) to ride past a red light if it's been red for more than 2 minutes, or I've sat through 2 light changes - whichever is shorter. I hope I don't have to use this too often though!
