Indeed it was. I remember the very first one as a bunch of cyclists rode through my neighborhood and I wondered
"WTF is that? How can I get down with them?" 
The following year I was riding with them. It was indeed a lot of fun back in the 70s and early 80s before it got too damn big, although I did one about 2007 or so regardless, just for the nostalgia.
