I bought some 22mm cloth rim strip tape in anticipation of needing to replace the old thin rubber rim strips on my Z-1000 rims (622x20). But I didn't realize the inner rim was stepped. Will the overlap matter? I suppose I could trim the strip or order narrower strip tape if necessary, but if I can use it as-is, so much the better.
And FWIW, I'm about to replace the 700x38 Specialized Hemisphere tires with 700x40 Michelin Protek Max Cross City tires. Not sure whether I'll recycle the old tubes or go with self sealing tubes. I'm more concerned with minimizing flats than with speed. Since resuming riding six weeks ago I've repaired three flats. The Hemisphere tires are good, but no match for the goathead burrs and shards of metal I encounter on the road shoulders in my suburban/rural riding area. I just picked out half a dozen goathead burrs, some glass and a few metal shards from the tire, only two of which actually punctured the tube. No avoiding that sorta thing here, so I'm going with heavier tires and possibly tubes, if that matters regarding the rim strip.
