It was the Thai stick, the other illegal substance in that letter and that is another story, a really good story. Ah, those days were so much simpler with unfettered mail delivery. The amphetamine was in a 100 mg capsule and like a stupid 18 year old, I took it one morning before heading off to school.

About half way into my trip to school, about 7 miles, the amphetamine started to kick in. An afterburner drug for humans. I passed everyone including quite a few cars. When I got to school, I bounced up the stairs in the lecture hall, 5 steps at a time. My friends kind of noticed I seemed a bit more peppy. 3 hours of lectures passed by very quickly and my retention way amazing. It was a short class day so I headed out on my bike afterwards and probably covered 50 miles that afternoon. It was a very good day and even coming down, it was bed time. No bad effects for the once only use. Too bad everyday couldn't be like that. I had enough sense to know that there are serious consequences of regular amphetamine use. I had no desire to do it again. I do see why people like meth and develop a very destructive lifestyle using it.

I always though the solution to doping in athletic competitions is have two competitions. One competition would be drug free and the other one, anything goes. It would an interesting but very unethical study into the effects of performance enhancing drugs.
A few years ago, a writer from Outside took a full course of PEDs, including EPO, steroids, and stimulants, to see if they worked. Conclusion: yes, they do.
