In the Marines, we used those to pound tent stakes all over the world. They were universally hated, because we couldn't break them.
When they showed up with those in the movie, the whole theater groaned. Some guy yelled, "run, they're gonna make you put up a tent!"
There are a lot of well-known folks in that movie, uncredited, just hanging out. I think Billy Vera and the Beaters was one of the bar bands.

Dafoe is a walking ghoul in that movie. The suspenders, rubber hip waders, sunken cheeks. Each side only had one intelligent person.
