When he was in the air he probably felt off balance or thought he wasn't going to make the gap so he bailed. Unfortuantely he got caught in the bike when he landed. Yes he has landed bigger but even the best do stupid mistakes, however 35ft is no little drop, that is still a reasonable size for him. Hoperfully he'll be back up and riding in the not too distant future. Get well soon man.
