That concerns me a bit. I also want my voice to be heard as an everyday, bike-traveling, fun-loving transportation bicyclist!
Majority of people who purchase bicycles do so for recreational or fitness reasons and not for transportation. Majority of cyclists out there are recreational cyclists and not transportational cyclists and that's way they are the voice of cycling and they have a lot more influence then the minority who rides for transportation. That's the reality for now, maybe things will change in the future...Not all bike shops are snobby elitists, most of the LBS in my area carry a wide variety of different bicycles, most are commuter friendly and carry bikes and accessories for commuter cyclists.
