If you want pretty, without a lot of Shimano's modern flame-surface styling, consider silver Athena. Oooh, ahhh. Veloce looks very similar at a lower price tag.
But on the other hand I've got Athena shifters on my commuter. I've had no particular quality problems, but I think they have a lot of slop to take up before they start pulling cable on each downshift. I've not got enough brifter experience to compare but I know I don't like it. I don't mind the individual thumbie upshift.
